This world-renowned certification program is a great way to start your lifelong adventures as a certified diver. Personalized training is combined with in-water practice sessions to give you the skills and experience you need to be truly comfortable underwater.
You’ll earn the Open Water Diver SSI certification.
The different trainings
Scuba Diver
You want to become an SSI open water diver, but you don’t have enough time to do the whole training, it is possible to start your training with us, continue it in another SSI center or finish it during your next stay on the island. The SSI Scuba Diver is a part of the open water certification, it allows you to do supervised exploration dives up to 12 meters. The scuba diver is composed of 3 technical dives in a protected natural environment, and the first 3 theoretical modules of the open water. Scuba Diver Junior from 10 to 15 years old.
The Scuba Diver SSI program provides students with the knowledge and training necessary to dive under the direct supervision of a Dive Professional in environments equivalent to their training and to depths less than 12m.
Prerequisite to take/complete the course:
- Be at least 10 years old
- Complete the theory chapters 1 to 3 + evaluation of the Open Water Diver manual
- Complete at least 3 training dives
- Pass the final theory exam of the program
We offer you the Scuba Diver in 3 dives in a protected natural environment. This training will allow you to be autonomous with your equipment as well as to evolve in a new world while being safe.

From Scuba Diver to Open Water Diver
You already have the Scuba Diver certification and wish to complete your training to become an Open Water Diver? It is possible by completing only 4 technical dives and the 3 missing theory modules as well as the final exam allowing you to enrich your knowledge.

Open Water Diver (OW)
With the SSI open water certification in your pocket, discover the seas and oceans of our planet. It is obtained in 7 technical dives in natural environment. The first dives are done at shallow depths in order to validate the technical skills along with the 6 theoretical modules validated by a multiple choice exam. The last dives of the training are oriented on the planning and management of an autonomous dive.
At the end of the training, the Open Water Diver SSI has the knowledge and training necessary to dive independently, in an environment corresponding to their training, with a buddy holding at least an equivalent qualification, and to a maximum depth of 18 meters.

From Open water Diver (OW) to Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW)
At the end of your OW SSI training, you can do exploration dives within the limits of your OW, take the Advanced Adventurer course which consists in discovering 5 different specialties or take the AOW course which is obtained after having validated 4 specialties. You must have a minimum of 24 dives to validate the AOW.
From Open Water Diver (OW) To ’Advanced Adventure (AA)
- The Advanced Aventure (AA) :
The SSI AA program allows divers certified to at least the OW to discover 5 different specialty programs by doing a discovery dive of each specialty under the direct supervision of an SSI professional. The AA is accompanied by a theory kit.
Ouanalao Dive offers the following specialties:
- Deep diving,
- Nitrox,
- Navigation (Orientation),
- Night diving,
- Buoyancy,
- Wreck,
- React right,
- Diver Stress and Rescue
- From Open water to Advanced Adventure :
You must choose 4 specialties, accompanied by their theoretical digital kit.
Each specialty consists of 2 to 3 technical dives.
A total of 8 technical dives that can be completed by exploration dives to get the 24 dives needed for the AOW validation.
Like the OW, the AOW can be started in one SSI center and continued in another center until certification.
Conditions to follow/validate the course :
- Be at least 12 years old
- Possess the OWD or JOWD
- Have a minimum of 24 dives before certification (including OW and AOW training)
- Make 2 dives per specialty.
- Pass the exams for each specialty.

From Advanced Aventurer (AA) to Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW).
You have done 5 discovery dives in 5 different specialties (AA), you wish to obtain the AOW SSI:
The discovery dives you did during your AA training can be used as training credit for the first dives of the chosen specialties for your Advanced Open Water training. You still have to choose 4 specialties and complete the dive of each specialty you choose.
The first dive of any eligible specialty program can also be credited as an adventure dive for the Advanced Adventurer program. Certified Advanced Adventurer divers may dive with a buddy who holds at least the same certification, in environments equivalent to their training and within the recommended depth limits.

Description of the different specialties
Deep Diving
The Deep Diving SSI program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely conduct open water dives to depths between 18 and 40 m.
Condition to follow/validate the course:
- Be at least 15 years old
- Complete all theory sessions and evaluations of the Deep Diving Instructor Manual
- Complete at least 3 training dives
- Pass the final exam of the program

Divers certified or in training for Enriched Air Nitrox 32 must check the percentage of oxygen in their breathing mixture in the presence of a diving professional before each dive.
Students under 15 years of age will be certified as Junior Diver SSI in the appropriate program, and may dive under the direct supervision of a Diver Professional.
Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN) 32
The Enriched Air Nitrox SSI program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely dive using enriched gas mixtures.
Requirement to take/complete the course:
- Be at least 10 years old
- Complete theory sessions 1 to 3 as described in the Enriched Air Nitrox Instructor Manual
- Complete at least 2 training dives
- Pass the final exam of the program

Navigation (orientation)
The Navigation SSI program provides students with the knowledge and skills to safely navigate underwater using natural and compass orientation techniques

- Be at least 10 years old
- Complete all theory and evaluation sessions of the Navigation Instructor Manual
- Complete at least 2 training dives
- Pass the final exam of the program

React Right

Requirements to take/complete the course:
- Be at least 12 years old
- Complete the theoretical and practical training scenarios as described in the React Right Instructor Manual for the relevant parts of the program.
- Complete at least 2 training dives
- Pass the React Right final exam.
The initial React Right certification is valid for two years from the date of certification. By participating in the React Right Update, students can extend their certification for an additional two years.
Students with CPR, First Aid, AED and/or oxygen delivery certification from another organization may participate in a React Right Update program and receive equivalent React Right certification.
